Understated luxury in nature’s embrace
rates from 7,500 €
Location
Situated in Messinia, in the southwest corner of the Peloponnese, The Grove is set in a tranquil spot, surrounded by centuries-old olive trees and the sounds of nature, just 500 meters from the sea. Voted one of the 20 best destinations in the world by National Geographic Traveler, Messinia is a dazzling mosaic of unspoiled nature, quaint villages and fascinating historical sites. Guests at The Grove will have the opportunity to explore a diverse landscape of rolling hills, crystalline rivers, deep gorges, flamingo-flecked lagoons and fairy-tale waterfalls. When not lounging on some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, they can delve into 4,500 years of history with visits to awe-inspiring archaeological sites, Byzantine churches and imposing medieval castles. In the cosy atmosphere of traditional tavernas or on visits to local producers, guests will also discover the rich culinary heritage of a region acclaimed for its figs, raisins and what is arguably the finest olives and olive oil in the world. And while the pace of life is easy and relaxed, the adventurous traveller will find plenty to do. From snorkelling, scuba diving and windsurfing, to hiking, cycling and horse riding, there is a wide choice of sports and activities on land and sea, including two signature 18-hole golf courses less than an hour away.
Description
Standing on 3,500 m2 of land, The Grove comprises two separate properties that can be rented together or the main house alone (during off season), with guests enjoying access to the pool in either case. Originally a farmhouse and a barn, both buildings have been lovingly restored and transformed into two welcoming homes that retain their old charm while offering a host of modern comforts.
The two-storey main house (184 m2) has three bedrooms on the upper floor. The master bedroom has a double bed (160 x 200 cm), ensuite bathroom, and a private balcony. Of the other two bedrooms, one has a double bed (120 x 190 cm) while one has two singles (90 x 200 cm) which can be joined to form a double. These two bedrooms share a bathroom and a large veranda with a staircase leading down to the garden and pool. All three bedrooms afford views of the olive grove and surrounding landscape as far as the sea. On the ground floor there is a spacious living room with fireplace, a dining room, a kitchen, and a bathroom. The dining room opens onto the yard, while the kitchen and living room afford direct access to a large covered terrace with outdoor kitchen, dining and sitting area in the shade of jasmine-covered pergolas.
Standing in the middle of the garden, facing the pool, the former barn (78 m2) has a unique architectural character that is somewhere between a Nordic cabin and a traditional Greek country house, with elements of both existing in perfect harmony. The ground floor features a comfortable living space with a large glass door that opens onto the yard, bathing the interior in glorious sunlight and ‘extending’ the house to the pool. On the same level there is a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area, a bedroom with a double bed (160 x 200 cm) and direct access to the garden, plus a spacious bathroom. A staircase leads from the living space to the mezzanine, where there is a second bedroom with double bed (160 x 200 cm) and a bathroom.
The sustainable gardens around both houses, full of resilient native plants that blend in with the natural landscape, offer guests shaded corners for relaxation and seclusion. The centrepiece, of course, is the outdoor pool that is the ideal spot for lounging with a cool drink in the shade of olive trees, but also large enough (3.50 x 11 m) to swim laps.
